Turkey’s Presidency of Migration Management has closed 1169 neighborhoods to new Foreign residence register
Turkey’s Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı) announced on 30.06.2022, that foreign nationals would no longer be able to register new residence in a total of 1169 neighborhoods across the country, starting 1st of July 2022.
The state migration policy underlines that the density of foreign nationals can not exceed 20% of the total population in one neighborhood and 10% of the population of the town, district or city.
According to the new declaration about new applications, there are a total of 1169 closed neighborhoods in 58 different provinces. As a result, the new foreign applicants may not receive any residence permit, even if they buy property in these closed neighborhoods.
The new announcement is made regarding new residence permit applications. To point out, there is no problem to extend the stay in these neighborhoods, if the foreiners’s address is already registered on the website of the Turkish Population Department.
Likewise, these restrictions for new residence register, apply equally to individuals seeking registration under Temproray Protection (Geçici Koruma) system for Syrian refugees, the İnternational Protection (Uluslararası Koruma) system for asylum-seekers of all other nationalities, as well as for general resident permits for foreign nationals. Exceptions are only to be given where necessary to facilitate family unification of nuclear family members and for the registration of newborns.
However, the new residence register announcement will not affect property purchases directly. Accordingly, Turkish citizens who live abroad or foreigners can still buy property in these regions and stay within the borders of Turkey for up to 180 days a year according the tourist visa regulations.
